About Us
Welcome to Door of Hope Northeast ('s modest website)! We are a simple church pursuing the risen Jesus in deep community in and for Portland, Oregon.

We launched in 2020 as part of the Door of Hope Family of Churches. While Northeast is a distinct church community with our own elders, staff, community groups, and more, we partner with Door of Hope Southeast in sharing a common mission, pillars, theological vision, and some resources.

Committing to a local church is a deeply important part of following Jesus, and there are a lot of great churches in Portland. The best way to get to know us, in particular, is through connecting with our people, but read below to learn more about what we believe and how we function in the city. We also encourage you to listen to our most recent vision teaching series to catch up on where we believe we're headed.
The Good News
Christian communities are ones that have believed and continually proclaim the "gospel", which simply means "the good news" of Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul declared the good news is "the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes."

The good news is that God loves you. Though you’ve rebelled against your loving creator God (whether knowingly or unknowingly), God Himself--in the person of Jesus Christ--died to atone for your sins. He was nailed to the cross, died, and was buried. Three days later he genuinely, bodily rose from the grave, proving his victory over death and the truth of his claims to many witnesses. Jesus reigns now as God’s long-promised king, and we wait for his kingdom to come in full when he returns to put everything right, to bring his perfect justice to bear on the world. Apart from anything you could possibly do, he freely, graciously offers you full forgiveness, genuine righteousness, and eternal life and purpose in his Kingdom, all at the price of simply turning to him in trust.

Put more simply, "the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Door of Hope Northeast will continually invite you to believe this news, receive it for yourself, and begin following this Jesus in community with your full self.
Our Beliefs
We seek to honor and represent historic Christian orthodoxy in our doctrine and ethics. In addition to the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, Door of Hope Northeast affirms the beliefs listed below. If you're interested in learning more about how we form our theological convictions, listen to our "Theology in Community" teaching series. You can also find our sermons and other written resources that reflect our beliefs on the resources page.
Bible
We believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God (2 Tim. 3:16-17; 2 Pet. 1:21; 1 Cor. 2:13; Mark 12:26,36; 13:11; Acts 1:16; 2:4).

God
We believe that there is one God, who eternally exists in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; and that these three having the same nature, attributes, and perfections, are worthy of all worship, confidence and obedience (Mark 12:29; John 1:1-4; Mat. 28:19,20; Acts 5:3,4; 2 Cor. 13:14; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 1:4-6).

Jesus
We believe in the deity of Jesus Christ; in His Virgin Birth; in His sinless humanity; in His miracles; in His perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people through the shedding of His blood and death on the cross; in His bodily resurrection; in His ascension to the right hand of the Father; and in His personal return in power and glory (Matthew 1:18-25; John 1:14, 8:40,58; Acts 1:9-11; Romans 5:8-10; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:8).

Humanity
We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that through Adam’s sin all of mankind has fallen and inherited a sin nature, thus man in his natural state is lost, alienated from God and incapable of attaining salvation by any personal effort or merit (Genesis 1:26; Romans 3, 5:12-19; Ephesians 2:1-3, 4:18-19).

Salvation
We believe that salvation is a free gift of God offered to all humanity by grace and received through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This faith is expressed in works pleasing to God. We believe that all true believers, having been justified, shall be kept saved forever (John 3:16, 14:6; Romans 3:28, 8:31-39; 1 Corinthians 12:13; Galatians 3:26-27,36-39; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Timothy 2:5-6).

Holy Spirit
We believe in the promise of the Holy Spirit, not as an influence, but as a Divine Person, who was sent at Pentecost to unify all believers into one body, the Church, whose indwelling is the source and power of all acceptable worship and service. He is our abiding Comforter and Helper, and is ever present to testify of Christ (John 7:38-39; 14:16-17; 15:26; 16:13-14; Acts 1:8; Rom. 8:9; Phil. 3:3).
Resurrection
We believe in the physical resurrection of both the saved and the lost: those who are saved unto the resurrection of life, and those who are lost unto the resurrection of damnation (Rom 8:23; I Cor 15, Psalm 90:3-4; Rev 20:12-15; Mat 25:31-46).

Church
We believe in the Church which is the body and bride of Christ, that we are a spiritual family united by the Holy Spirit, and thus being members one of another we are responsible in good conscience to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, loving one another with a pure heart. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Head over all the church, commanded His people to hold to the practice of water baptism and the regular taking of Communion. We do not believe that either of these practices is essential for salvation, but that they serve as a demonstration of our living faith in Him.

Our Four Pillars
Our approach to ministry is marked by these four primary values. They aren't the only things we care about, but they uniquely shape all that we do as a church. To listen to a teaching series explaining these in more detail, click here for audio and here for video.
Cross
This cross pillar defines our theology. We preach Jesus Christ crucified, raised, and reigning. He is the way, the truth, and the life. The Gospel is the center of Christianity and the cross is the center of the Gospel. This is the place where we enter His death to discover again and again the power of His resurrection life by the filling of His Spirit. (1 Corinthians 1:22-25)
Community
The community pillar defines our membership. We are being increasingly knit together as spiritual family. We recognize that transformation does not occur in isolation but through life together. The gospel must be lived out with others, and so we are committed to working out our salvation together in intentional, proximate community. (Mark 10:28-31)

Simplicity
The simplicity pillar defines our philosophy. We keep the main things the main things. Buildings, programs and methods do not define the church. We are the church as we deepen our commitment and connection to Christ. Simplicity as a philosophy forces us to continually ask the question: Is everything we are doing clearly pointing to and honoring Jesus? An implication of this is that we desire to do fewer things better. (Matthew 6:30-33)
City
The city pillar defines our mission and relational center. We are committed to the city of Portland. This is the city where God has called us to be ambassadors of reconciliation. We believe the best way to bring reconciliation to any city is to be a reconciled people living there. We are not looking to be only a Sunday presence in the city, but an integral, daily, faithful witness and presence to the grace of Jesus. (2 Corinthians 5:17-20)
Our Staff & Elders
We are overseen and protected by a team of qualified elders. The elder team as a whole has entrusted leadership of the individual ministries of our church to a multifaceted group of gifted elders and deacons, both staff and volunteer. Reach out to any of the leaders below for care, questions, or simply to connect!
